Bhavanidas, a Mughal émigré who began his professional journey before Aurangzeb's demise in 1707. He mastered the art of painting generational portraits of the Mughal imperial family. He worked in the Lahore atelier patronised by Prince Muhammad Mu’azzam (later Bahadur Shah I). However, following Aurangzeb’s closure of the atelier, he was compelled to relocate to Kishangarh. While working in the Mughal court, he developed his pictorial style in the reign of Shah Jahan, demonstrating particular expertise in depicting hierarchical order and dynastic lineage. His works also reveal a strong emphasis on the formal arrangement and representation of the imperial court. His virtuosity is evident in his artworks, particularly in his ability to create lively compositions that capture a specific moment and convey a sense of immediacy. Raj Singh on Terrace Enjoying a View of Royal Barges and Military Formations is one of the artworks by Bhavanidas, painted in Kishangarh. Maharaja Raj Singh was the seventh ruler of Kishangarh, ruling from 1706 to 1748. Under his patronage, Bhavanidas and his son Dalchand laid the foundations for the development of Kishangarh Miniature painting, renowned for its précised depiction of subtle facial features. Dated to 1728, the painting depicts fifty-three-year-old Raj Singh standing in an erect and dignified posture against a landscape of a lake and hills, with details of an army visible in the background. These details form part of his refined pictorial qualities associated with the style that he developed during his training at the imperial court. He meticulously gives importance to the detailing and technical skill. In the upper portion, the small details like the golden streaks in the sky, the hills, and the small figures of horses, elephants, and soldiers are rendered with softness and precision. Another precise detail includes the curved forms of the horses. The structure of the boats is very similar to the one he created during his career at the Mughal court. Based on close observation, he depicted Raj Singh with a slightly heavy chin, demonstrating his skill in capturing individual features. Hence, his work provides an understanding of the courtly life and identity of the period.
Bhavanidas masterfully bridged Mughal technical precision and Kishangarh’s emerging miniature style. Relocating after Aurangzeb closed the imperial atelier, he elevated regional courtly portraiture through dynamic compositions. His 1728 grand portrait of Maharaja Raj Singh exemplifies this virtuosity, expertly blending subtle, individual facial features with meticulously detailed landscapes and royal barges.
