Qasam al-Abbas Arrives from Mecca and Crushes Tahmasp with a Mace

Artist:Mahesh
Support Type: Cotton Cloth
Paint Type: Gouache
Current Location: Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

This Mughal miniature, attributed to Mahesha (Mahesh) and dated to around 1562–1577, comes from Akbar's monumental Hamzanama, a manuscript narrating the legendary adventures of Hamza. It is painted in opaque watercolor with gold- and silver-colored metallic pigments on cotton. In this painting we find a moment of violent fight between Qasam al-Abbas and the Persian king Tahmasp. Tahmasp is in the foreground on a camel, and Qasam is on the right on a horse with a rich caparison. You could cut the tension with a knife. Guns are out, animals are going eccentric, and the figures in the distance behind the rocks look like they're staring at the fight. The sense of movement is quite interesting in this painting. Using overlapping bodies, diagonally placed weapons, animated horses, and sharply turned heads, the artist creates the impression of an unfolding battle. Instead of lining up the figures in a strict linear fashion, Mahesh fills the picture with activity, coaxing the viewer's eye from the foreground figures toward the group of warriors huddled in the background. The costumes and armor are equally important in their rich patterns. Textiles, saddles, and protective armor are decorated with complex floral and geometric motifs with touches of metallic pigment, giving an almost luminous quality to the objects. The contrast between the figures covered in dense patterns and the dark textured landscape makes it easy to identify the protagonists. The painting also reflects the collaborative and experimental character of Akbar's atelier.
