Umehara’s Pumpkin (1948) transforms an ordinary still-life subject into a lively study of colour, texture, and form. The bold rust-orange, green, blue, and cream strokes give the pumpkins a dynamic, almost rhythmic quality. Rather than aiming for realistic representation, Umehara combines Western Impressionist brushwork with the clarity and decorative sensibility of Japanese art. The result is a vibrant and expressive painting in which colour and brushwork become more important than literal likeness.
