Prince at Rest

Artist:Miskin
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Mixed Media
Current Location: Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Los Angeles, California, USA. It is in the South and Southeast Asian Art collection (accession no. M.84.32.7)
Location History:Made c. 1600–1605 in Mughal India, probably for Prince Salim; remounted in a gold border c. 1608 as part of Jahangir’s dictionary (Farhang-i Jahangiri); later owned by Nasli and Alice Heeramaneck of New York; now in LACMA, Los Angeles (not on view), with no recorded owners documented between 1608 and the Heeramanecks.

The museum that holds the drawing offers two possible stories. The water may have been poisoned, or the prince may have lost his temper and struck the dog down for spilling it. The artist does not tell us which, so we are left to wonder. Look around the edges and the world keeps going. Two European scholars talk while a young boy listens. A man blows on a small fire. Holy men sit outside a temple and a cave, and another climbs steps to a little shrine. Over all very nice painting.
