Mangala Bai Thampuratty was born around 1865 into the Kilimanoor royal family in Kerala — the younger sister of Raja Ravi Varma, arguably the most famous Indian painter of his era. She died sometime in 1953 or 1954, and in the decades between, she quietly became one of the first Indian women of the 1800s to actually work inside an artist's studio, not just admire one from a distance.
She never had formal training in the way her brothers did. What she had was proximity — watching her uncle Raja Raja Varma, then her brothers Ravi Varma and C. Raja Raja Varma, mix pigments and build up a canvas at the family studio in Kilimanoor. From that she absorbed the Western academic realist style the Kilimanoor school became known for, and turned it toward portraits, domestic life, and devotional subjects. The times weren't exactly generous to a woman wanting a painting career, but she kept at it well into old age, helping with larger family commissions and later passing on what she knew to the next generation of family artists.
Her portrait of Ravi Varma, painted sometime in the 1900s after he died, is probably the piece she's best remembered for — and it's hard not to read it as personal. She worked in the same realist oil tradition he did, and her handling of it was apparently close enough to his own hand that he once looked at one of her paintings and thought it was his.
