Portrait of a Parsi Lady is a bust-length oil portrait of an unidentified Parsi woman, painted in December 1914 by Pestonji E. Bomanji. The composition is tightly framed, placing the subject at the centre of a warm, darkened background that transitions from deep brown at the edges to a muted reddish-brown in the middle. This use of a shadowed ground is characteristic of academic European portraiture as practiced at the Bombay School, situating the sitter against an indeterminate, studio-like space that concentrates visual attention entirely on the figure.
The woman is depicted facing the viewer with a composed, direct gaze. Her expression is restrained rather than decorative. The eyes are dark and steady, rendered with sufficient tonal depth to convey individuality. The face is painted with naturalistic attention to skin tone and volume, neither idealised nor flattered, which is consistent with the approach the Times of India once described as "realistic and warty," comparing Bomanji's portraits to the work of Dutch realists. This commitment to unglamourised likeness distinguished Bomanji from contemporary salon painters who softened their subjects.
The woman wears a green dupatta or sari draped loosely over her head and falling across both shoulders. The border of the draped cloth is embroidered with a repeated floral motif in what appears to be metallic thread. This embroidery is consistent with Gara work, the historically significant hand-embroidered textile tradition associated with Parsi women. When nineteenth-century Parsee traders began returning from China with embroidered silk, the first garas carried Chinese motifs such as the Divine Fungus, the Endless Knot roosters, pagodas, foliage and butterflies. As more women took interest in these garments, they adapted them to their own tastes and traditions. The border visible in this portrait shows a restrained row of small floral forms, consistent with how Gara embroidery was worn by Parsi women in formal or ceremonial contexts well into the early twentieth century.
Beneath the dupatta, the sitter wears a dark bodice with dense embroidery across the chest. Her blouse sleeve, visible on the right side of the composition, is rendered in a lighter, warm gold tone with scattered floral embroidery, likely representative of a traditional Parsi blouse worn under a sari. Two strands of pearls are layered at her neck: a shorter choker-style strand and a longer single-pearl necklace that drops toward the chest and terminates in a brooch or pendant. Small stud earrings are visible at the ears.
Bomanji was often referred to as India's Rembrandt for the unflattering realism of his portraits. He was a Parsi and his portraiture work was largely confined to painting members of his community, inadvertently creating an ethnographic record of the Parsis. The details of attire in this picture are of special note: the embroidery on the saree border and blouse represents the historically significant Gara embroidery associated with the sarees worn by Parsi women well into the first half of the twentieth century.
As one of India's earliest practicing Parsi artists who primarily painted members of his own community, Bomanji's work can serve as an ethnographic study of Parsi customs and practices. An interesting aspect of his work is the number of real women he captures in his portraits, serving as a reminder that Parsi women were among the earliest entrants into public life and social activism when compared to their counterparts from other communities.
The painting is signed in the lower right corner and dated December 1914, when the artist was 63 years old. At this stage in his career, Bomanji had long completed his decade-long work at the Ajanta Caves and his apprenticeship under Valentine Prinsep, and had already served as the first Indian vice-principal of Sir J.J. School of Art. The 1914 portrait reflects his mature command of tonal painting: light falls from an implied upper-left source, catching the forehead and nose of the sitter while the periphery of the face and background recede into shadow. The handling of paint is confident and direct, with minimal blending at the surface that allows the viewer to perceive the facture of the strokes, particularly in the background and costume.
