Portrait of a Parsi Lady

Pestonjee E. Bomanjee is known as one of the most prominent realist painters of India. He was trained under John Criffiths at the Sir J. J. School of Art. His artworks are greatly influenced by European realism. The subjects of his paintings are usually members of the Parsi community. The community contributed greatly to the financial fortunes of the city of Bombay through trade. This portrait dated to 1914 depicts a seated Parsi woman dressed in a traditional richly embroidered Gara sari with a beautifully embroidered border and finely decorated blouse. Bomanjee’s attention to the textures of the silk saree, jewelry and skin is remarkable and has conveyed the richness of the material. The lady sits confidently; her calm gaze is directed to the right. The plain brown background allows the viewer to focus entirely on the lady and her expression, clothes, and nature become the central focus.
