Domenico Fetti’s Portrait of a Man with a Sheet of Music is a striking example of the artist’s interest in informal portraiture and the psychological presence of the sitter. The painting presents a man shown from the waist or chest upward, holding a sheet of musical notation, which establishes music as an important element of his identity. The sitter is portrayed with a direct, engaging expression, while the relatively subdued background concentrates attention on his face, clothing and the musical sheet. Fetti uses a warm, earthy palette and soft transitions of light and shadow to model the face and hands. The handling is relatively loose and painterly, characteristic of Fetti’s mature style and his connection with the naturalistic traditions of early 17th century Italian painting.
