Ren Renfa’s Out of the Stable (Chu Yu Tu) is dated back to 1280, making it one of the most invaluable surviving works of the Yuan horse paintings. Created on a silk handscroll with ink and color, the painting depicts three stable officials leading out four horses from the imperial stables. Its composition is sprawling, yet the artist manages to capture the Tang elegance with space arrangement and the figures’ placement. The Tang style is further emphasized by the horsemen’s costume, which can be seen in the Tang-era murals. Yet, the figures’ simplicity and the treatment of the horse suggest a painterly refinement typical for Ren Renfa. The latter usually drew his horses in precise, clear lines with a slightly emphasized musculature and well-defined washes.
The piece has a special historical significance because it is the earliest surviving example of Ren’s work, done at the age of only 27. He was evidently a master of painting horses, an art that had a significant cultural and political importance in the Song and Yuan Dynasties. The artist perfectly conveyed the spirit and energy of the horses in motion, making his horses famous all over the country. Notably, the scroll has also been annotated and praised by the Emperor Qianlong, who highly appreciated the piece and recognized its value. Nowadays, the painting is safely stored in the Palace Museum in Beijing, fully appreciated by the modern viewers for its elegance. As seen in this work, Ren Renfa’s horses paintings are a true blend of Tang tradition and the Yuan dynasty spirit.
The composition stands out for its meticulous line work (gongbi) and subtle color palette on silk. Ren captures a deep sense of realism in the anatomy and heavy build of the dark horse, contrasted elegantly against the flat, unadorned negative background typical of early scholarly ink painting. The interaction between the stable officers and their steeds highlights the era's courtly sophistication, framed beautifully by authentic imperial collector seals and calligraphic inscriptions.
