Entered the Tribuna of the Uffizi on 29 June 1605, originally attributed to Rosso Fiorentino
The Playing Putto (or Musician Angel, or Angel Playing the Lute, Italian: Putto che suona) is a small and well-loved Mannerist painting on panel of a cherub playing a lute by the Florentine painter Rosso Fiorentino, datable to 1521. It's a perfect example of Rosso's unique divergence from the classical balance and restraint typical of the High Renaissance. To this day, it remains one of the Uffizi Gallery's holdings, displayed under the title Angel Playing the Lute, catalogued under the inventory number 1890 no. 1505 (Uffizi Galleries).
39.5 cm by 47 cm in size, it is rendered in oil on a wood panel, according to the Uffizi Galleries, although other minor sources assign the medium as oil and tempera on panel. The painting sports an abrasion of the inscription in its lower right hand corner, which translates to "R(u)beus florentini fe(cit?)" followed by the year "MDXXI." Traditionally, use of the title "Florentinus" indicated Rosso worked on this piece outside of Florence while he was living in Volterra, though this signature should be read with caution, as recent researches in Uffizi's catalogues showed that reflectographic examinations recorded the presence of an inscription under the dark painted background; the signature itself and the darker background might be added during the dismantle of the larger altarpiece.
The picture has had a quite long ownership, although the attribution of the painting underwent many alterations before returning back to Rosso Fiorentino.
The painting was acquired on June 29, 1605, when placed in the Tribuna of the Uffizi, attributed to Rosso Fiorentino. Later inventories described it as the work of other painters: Domenico Beccafumi was identified as the author between 1635 and 1704 and the year 1753; it was listed as a work by Francesco Vanni in 1784 and only in 1825 it was again properly recognized as work by Rosso Fiorentino. Likewise, according to the cataloguing database held by the Uffizi Galleries and Italy's cataloguing system of national cultural patrimony, the painting was placed into the Tribuna of Uffizi gallery on 29 June 1605 under the attribution to Rosso Fiorentino, but later entries have suggested other attributions before it was recognised again as an autograph work of Rosso.
It’s remarkable how such tiny and oddly looking painting went through several attribution revisions due to its modest dimension and fragmentary format; until 2000 the painting was regarded as an autonomous cabinet work, until a restyling carried out during restoration brought crucial information about it. Reflectographic checks confirmed that the present dark background is an addition and that underneath were layers of architecture: parallel cuts indicating stairs, which identified the scene from the lost altarpiece. Uffizi Galleries itself admits the presence of architecture under the dark background thanks to reflectographic analysis and defines the surviving fragment a part of a lost altarpiece.
This observation fundamentally changed how the artwork was considered: not as an independent painting of a winged singer, but as part of an entire religious masterpiece.
It is now believed to be Rosso Fiorentino's lost altarpiece of the Virgin and Child with saints since Francesco Vanni painted his Sacred Conversation around 1600, for the Collegiate Church of Sant'Agata at Asciano in Siena, which reprises most of Rosso's original scheme and of course its central music cherub at the foot of the Madonna's throne. Uffizi Galleries also identified the Vanni painting as essential key witness to the reconstruct its original context. The angel thus seems to have been seated at the base of an architectonic structure of a throne (presumably occupied by the Virgin and the Child, following a classical Italian style of the sixteenth century sacred painting), before its mutilation. The dark background was indeed likely introduced to render a cabinet picture, although the signature may have been added to authenticate the work at a latter stage, making the precise circumstances under which the painting has been transformed unclear.
The angelic child, though, really embodies Rosso's eccentric Mannerist talent.
As an angel, indeed, Rosso does not render a perfectly idealized form of it, nor did he idealise its proportion, and for this reason the boy has difficulty holding a lute bigger then himself and playing with. His intense concentration seems palpable. We are indeed able to hear through his gaze and his focused gesture the sound of the instrument which he is skillfully trying to listen better by turning his ear closer to his lute's soundbox, looking right at his left hand positioned on the strings.
The contrast between the coldness of the white skin of the angel and of the pale yellow of the wings and the golden brown color of the instrument are very accentuated whereas color spots are mainly around the child, as on inner parts of wings, cheeks and nose and gives a vibrant if subtle coloring. These colors as well as the wild reddish-brown curls don't represent the pure ideal beauty of an angel from any previous movement such as Renaissance but introduce artistic freedom in creating non-perfect representations of traditional themes which may well anticipate Baroque interpretations of subject matter. Light also plays an essential role since pale colors are able to make the angel well defined, bright despite the darker background where a strong highlight at the edge of shadow of the left wing perfectly stands out from the dark and creates a convincing feeling of a third dimensional object.
Therefore, through its highly expressiveness, its deliberate disorder and its peculiar combination of tradition and fantasy this little panel painting perfectly encapsulate the essence of what could be interpreted as an eccentric or avant-garde taste which had a revolutionary impact on the Mannerist movement
Rosso Fiorentino's *Musician Angel* (1521) captures a single suspended moment of tenderness within the artist's otherwise turbulent Mannerist vocabulary. The angel rests its cheek against the curved body of a lute, eyes lowered, absorbed entirely in the act of playing rather than performing for a viewer. This introspection sets it apart from the more theatrical angel musicians common in Renaissance altarpieces — here the mood is private, almost drowsy, closer to a study of a real child than an idealized celestial being.
The painting's power lies in its contrasts. Rosso sets the warm, golden glow of the lute's wood and the angel's flushed skin against a near-black background, so the figure seems to emerge from shadow rather than occupy a defined space. The wings, banded in soft grey-white and startling red, echo this same tension between gentleness and intensity. Brushwork on the tousled auburn curls is loose and painterly, while the hands one plucking the strings, one steadying the neck are rendered with careful anatomical attention, grounding the fantastical figure in physical plausibility.
Originally part of a larger altarpiece, the fragment now functions almost as an independent portrait of absorption: music-making reimagined not as spectacle but as quiet, solitary devotion.
