Mefistófeles (Mephistopheles) is an interesting 19th-century Spanish Romantic artwork by the Catalan Romantic master, Joaquin Espalter y Rull (1809–1880). The painting is a focal point of a dramatic scene based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s great work ‘Faust’. The scene is set in a dark and rugged landscape, featuring jagged rocks in the foreground, with the demon Mephistopheles depicted as a figure carrying the innocent Marguerite (Margarita) off to his lair.
Espalter has set up the structure around a high contrast of colour in ‘Fiendish Abductor’ and the ‘Victim’. The figure of the abductor is beautifully coloured in crimson, with flames and flashes that look like fire, and the background is a dark, murky earth, which distracts from the figure. A mask is affixed to his wrist, representing the deception and disguising he used to engage in to seduce the maiden. The Victim (Marguerite) is depicted in semi-nude and with alabaster skin and jewellery, representative of the seductive pleasures she is offered which tempt her to sin with Mephistopheles. The figures appear to be suspended from the canvas, with only minimal contact with it, lending the image a kinetic, supernatural quality.
Amadeo I’s reign coincided with the period of realism’s growth all over Europe, and Mefistófeles marked a late phase of Spanish Romanticism. Espalter usually combines light, theatrical Romantic style and the Italianate line drawing that he learned at San Jorge Academy in Barcelona, and in Paris under Antoine-Jean Gros and in Rome with the Nazarenes. The canvas draws attention to the 19th-century interest in the contrast of innocence and corruption, good and evil.
