Guru Nanak

Sobha Singh, born on 27 November 1901 was one of the greatest Punjabi artist, who learnt painting and sculpting on his own. He worked in the British Indian army as a draughtsman and was sent to Iraq, he also studied European paintings and was influenced by the painting style. Singh's most of the paintings were based on Sikh Gurus, village women and romantic themes of Soni and Mahiwal. Sobha generally used oil on canvas for his most paintings "Meditations on Guru Nanak" is a yet another beautiful, deeply spiritual and devout painting by him. In this painting Sobha has painted Guru Nanak Dev Ji with closed eyes and very calm facial expressions. Sobha has used very soft muted tones for this painting like sky blue, white, slight brown and a little bit of grey. The blue and white tones set a calm background for the viewers. He has also give soft shadows on Guru Nanak's cheeks, nose and forehead which make the painting even more captivating, also giving the painting a 3d effect. The painting conveys the feelings wisdom, calmness, devotion and inner contemplation which creates a deep spiritual sense in the minds of the viewers.
