Giulio Romano (1499-1546), born in Rome, was an Italian architect and a leading painter of Mannerism art movement. He received his training under Raphael and was immediately appointed as his most trusted assistant. Giulio's most significant contributions include Vatican Stanze, Stanza di Eliodoro, Stanza dell'Incendio, and Sala di Costantino. In 1520, upon Raphael's death, Giulio inherited his master workshop along with Gianfrancesco Penni. They completed many incomplete commissions while also introducing a much more dynamic and Mannerism style.
In 1524, Giulio Romano was assigned as the court painter and architect to Federico II Gonzaga in Mantua, where he majorly directed projects till he laid on his deathbed in 1546. His most renowned work was the Palazzo del Te (1527-34)— well-known for its dramatic frescoes with innovative architecture, namely Sala di Psiche and Sala dei Giganti. Giulio's works were classified into bold compositions and creative designs which heavily influenced the movement of Mannerist art style and architecture all across Europe.
"Madonna della Gatta" (1522-23) is one of the best examples of Giulio Romano's works belonging to the early Mannerist religious painting. The composition has been influenced from Leonardo da Vinci's and Raphael's pyramidal arrangements that creates a dynamic but harmonious grouping of the Virgin, the Christ Child, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint Elizabeth. The painting's name is coined from the domestic cat existing in the foreground, which was identified as il Quadro della Gatta by Giorgio Vasari. It's a very ordinary feature yet adds a lot of warmth to daily life scenes. Giulio's artistic skills to blend Renaissance elegance with upcoming Mannerist balance is very well reflected by his usage of vibrant and rich colours, graceful figures, and subtle emotional interactions.
Most likely, this artwork was done for Federico Gonzaga in Rome, and it later was added into the Gonzaga collection in Mantha. By the late 16th century, it was purchased by Barbara Sanseverino, however it was then confiscated by the Farnese family in 1612. The painting was then passed to Charles of Bourbon which was then transferred to Naples in around 1737, where it currently resides in the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte. The painting has had a long history of restorations from 1787-1981 due to the unstable paint layers. The painting still continues to be monitored and preserved actively.
Giulio Romano was Raphael's most brilliant pupil and heir to his workshop. In Madonna della Gatta, Romano proves his ability to execute his master's fluid line work while simultaneously asserting his own distinct artistic identity. He pushes past Raphael's calm perfection by introducing muscular tension, unexpected light sources, and a heavier, more dramatic atmosphere.
