Lovers in a Landscape is a small watercolour miniature by Mir Kalan Khan, painted in Lucknow between about 1760 and 1770 and mounted on an album leaf. It measures just 22.2 by 15.2 cm. Today it belongs to The David Collection in Copenhagen. It is one of the best-known works by this artist, and when it was shown in Los Angeles in 2010–11, in an exhibition on courtly Lucknow, it was nicknamed the “Mona Lisa” of Indian painting. The scene shows a young couple resting under a large plane tree while a woman plays a long-necked lute nearby. The couple look rather hesitant and dreamy. The museum notes that they resemble the fashionable young people of Isfahan painted about 150 years earlier by the Persian artist Riza-i Abbasi, so the painter was clearly drawing on Persian ideals of romantic youth. The lute player is entirely Indian in appearance, and the trees on the right follow European habits of painting. The strange golden-yellow background is described by the museum as original, though also very strange. Animals and birds gather in the foreground, and together with the great tree they bind these different elements into one lively picture. The mix makes sense in its time. After Nadir Shah sacked Delhi in the year of 1739, many artists left the Mughal capital for provincial courts. Mir Kalan Khan began his career at the Delhi court of Muhammad Shah and later settled in Oudh, working for the Nawabs. Lucknow town became a cosmopolitan centre where Persian, Mughal, Indian and European traditions met, and European painters, travellers and collectors were part of daily court life, His large scenes have been compared to Dutch and Flemish pictures.
