The painting was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1869, where it attracted considerable attention and helped establish Carolus-Duran’s reputation as a portrait painter. It is now held in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
Lady with a Glove is a painting that portrays a mysterious character in a bare grey-brown room. She is almost occupying the full height of the picture and wears a huge black dress, making the upper part of the painting dominated by her pale face, hands, and the accents of color in her clothing. The woman turns her head slightly to the side and looks at the viewer, creating an elusive and aloof impression. Her expression is difficult to read, but the pose reflects an absent-mindedness that suggests that the sitter had lost herself in thoughts and only allows people to observe her.
Her hands attract attention, as the woman is pulling off her grey glove, and another one lies at her feet. This element of the painting adds some lightness and movement to it, as the pose of the model suggests a moment just after she put the glove down or is preparing to take another one. However, the woman in the black dress seems to sink in the darkness as the most prominent element of the painting.
The color of the walls is neutral and subdued, contrasting the decorative garland of flowers on the wall behind her. At the same time, the pattern and texture of the border are similar to the fabric of the woman’s dress. It is hard to say if the interior is bare, as everything is covered in a certain color gamut that matches the character’s attire. Even her jewelry, hair decoration, and pale flowers in her hair frame the face, and the fluffy black dress takes the center. On the contrary, the overall look of the painting is not gloomy or black due to the warm white and red tones of her attire. I find this contrast very remarkable and appreciate how skillfully the artist managed to convey this atmosphere of restrained nobility.
I would like to explore the contrast between elegance and isolation in the picture. The woman is portrayed in a way that emphasizes her status and sophistication in dress and exterior. However, the large black dress almost swallows her, making the character look monumental, inaccessible, and mysterious. I think that the chosen detail with the glove falling next to her feet is significant for the painting’s overall impression, as it gives the model a human and sensitive expression.
The figure dominates the canvas and is shown in a frontal, upright pose. Her dark dress creates a strong contrast with her pale face and arms, while the gloves and jewellery draw attention to her elegant appearance. The work combines the polished appearance of academic portraiture with the freer brushwork associated with Realism and contemporary European painting.
