Augustin Arrieta was a 19th century Mexican Painter specializing in the genre of Costumbrista painting in the oil medium; Costumbrismo or Costumbrista is an art movement that gained traction during the 18th and 19th centuries in colonial Mexico, which aimed to purport racial hierarchies and subjugation of minorities to the masses of Mexico. Arrieta studied at the fine arts academy in Puebla, a small town where he spent most of his life after shifting there in his childhood from his hometown, Chiautempan. Arrieta's oeuvre comprises paintings portraying the daily life and customs of the Mexican people, still life's, portraits and a few religious artworks as well.
