L’Anniversaire, is an oil on canvas painting by Henri Fantin-Latour, a French painter and lithographer who lived from 1836 till 1904. It was painted as a tribute to the composer Hector Berlioz, who came from the same hometown as Fantin-Latour and passed away six years prior to the creation of the painting. In L’Anniversaire, the people in the painting embody different characters from Berlioz’s musical compositions, such as Marguerite (from La Damnation de Faust ), or Romeo and Juliet (from Roméo et Juliette). These figures are depicted to pay respect to Berlioz’s marble tomb, on which the composer’s name and birth date are labelled.
