Gang Hui-eon, who was also known as Gyeongun and whose studio name was Damjol, was an important artist of the late Joseon era who created paintings at the crossroads of true-view landscape painting (jingyeong sansuhwa), literati culture, and networks of the Seoul intellectual middle class. Gang Hui-eon can be considered a jungin artist and is of particular importance because he received his education under Jeong Seon (1676–1759) who was the key representative of the true-view landscape painting. The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture states that Gang Hui-eon resided in Samcheong-dong near Jeong Seon and studied painting with him; in addition, he maintained close relations with prominent literati-painter Gang Se-hwang (1713–1791) and young Kim Hong-do. Involvement in the discussed artistic circles puts the artist in the eighteenth-century culture when the interaction between painters, poets, art collectors and scholars became especially vivid. Though the number of paintings which survived until nowadays is quite small, the following works can be attributed to Gang Hui-eon: Inwangsando, Seokgongdo (The Stonecutter), and some pictures from the Sain Samgyeongdo collection. Gang Hui-eon's paintings have been of particular interest to scholars because they reflect how innovations by Jeong Seon were adopted by another generation and were not simply imitated. It is necessary to note that the history of the jingyeong sansuhwa shows that the approach of Jeong Seon towards representing the real Korean landscapes was developed by such artists as Gang Hui-eon, Kim Yun-gyeom, Kim Eung-hwan and others while the paintings of Gang Hui-eon introduced more reticence and observance.
Gang Hui-eon's Inwangsando (Painting of Inwang Mountain) is his best-known surviving landscape and one of the representative works of late-Joseon true-view landscape painting. The painting depicts Inwang Mountain as seen from Dohwadong in late spring, as indicated by the inscription at the upper right, which reads essentially “ascending Dohwadong in late spring and looking toward Inwang Mountain.” Rather than presenting an imaginary mountain based on conventional Chinese landscape models, Gang attempted to record a specific Korean place as it appeared to the observer, making the work an example of silgyeong sansu (實景山水), or real-view landscape. The composition differs significantly from Jeong Seon's famous Inwang Jewaedo (Inwangjesaekdo, 仁王霽色圖): whereas Jeong presents Inwang Mountain from the south/east with an imposing mass of dark granite after rain, Gang depicts the mountain from the north, giving a broader view of the landscape, settlements, vegetation, valleys, and surrounding terrain. Gang nevertheless clearly draws upon Jeong Seon's vocabulary. He uses mi-jeom (米點)—small rice-grain-like dots—to describe the vegetation and folds of the mountain, while axe-cut strokes (부벽준, 斧劈皴) help articulate rocky surfaces. Yet the effect is considerably lighter and more observational than Jeong Seon's powerful, dramatically simplified treatment of Inwang Mountain. The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture, whose entry was written by art historian Lee Tae-ho, emphasizes the painting's realistic observational quality: the village filled with peach blossoms, the mountain's contours, rocks, and spatial relationships are rendered with a strong sense of perspective, while the pale blue wash of the sky gives the scene an unusually fresh atmosphere. Particularly important is the inscription by Gang Se-hwang, one of the period's most important art critics, who praised the painting for being exceptionally close to the actual scene while avoiding the stiffness of a map. The National Museum of Korea interprets this comment as evidence of Gang Se-hwang's belief that a true-view painting needed to balance fidelity to reality with the aesthetic and emotional qualities of painting. This makes Inwangsando especially significant: it is neither merely a topographical record nor an imaginative literati landscape. Instead, Gang transforms a real Seoul landscape into an aesthetically organized painting. The small houses nestled among the valleys, peach blossoms, trees, distant mountain forms, and carefully differentiated spaces create a sense of lived landscape, while the restrained colouring and precise observation distinguish his work from Jeong Seon's more monumental and expressive vision. In this sense, Inwangsando demonstrates an important development in eighteenth-century Korean painting: the movement from simply depicting an identifiable place toward creating a visually convincing, empirically observed, yet aesthetically sophisticated image of Korea's own landscape. Therefore, Inwangsando becomes particularly noteworthy, because it is not just a geographical painting nor is it a literati landscape painting. On the contrary, Gang converts the actual landscape of Seoul into a well-composed painting. The little houses amidst the valleys, blooming peach flowers, trees, distant mountainous shapes, and the distinguished spaces all create the lived landscape. However, what differentiates this artwork from Jeong Seon's is the reserved color palette and precise observation of the landscape. In this way, Inwangsando proves to be the manifestation of an important evolution of eighteenth-century Korean paintings from simple depictions of recognizable places into an empirically composed but aesthetically refined landscape painting of Korea.
Inwangsando presents Inwang Mountain as a real, lived Korean landscape rather than an imaginary or idealized setting. Gang Hui-eon combines careful observation of the mountain, villages, vegetation, and valleys with the artistic techniques inherited from Jeong Seon. The restrained colours and delicate details create a calm and natural atmosphere, while the composition balances geographical accuracy with aesthetic beauty. The painting therefore represents the development of late-Joseon true-view landscape painting, showing how Korean artists transformed familiar local scenery into sophisticated works of art.
