In the garden

Support Type: Silk
Paint Type: Tempera
Current Location: Vadehra Art Gallery (New Delhi)
Location History:Mukherjee's daughter, the renowned sculptor Mrinalini Mukherjee, preserved and organised his remaining body of work. Subsequently, the Mrinalini Mukherjee Foundation took on the mantle of cataloging and digitizing his complete oeuvre. Through their archiving efforts, in collaboration with prominent art institutions like the Vadehra Art Gallery and research platforms such as the Tuli Research Centre, artworks residing in private collections—including In the Garden (1948)—were officially documented, authenticated, and brought into the public domain for academic research and gallery exhibitions.

Executed in tempera on silk, the artwork beautifully synthesizes the delicate fluid lyricism of the Bengal School with structural, calligraphic minimalism inspired by Far Eastern ink traditions. The composition relies on economic, rhythmic black outlines and earthy red accents to depict figures interacting with simplified, stylized foliage. By omitting traditional western perspective, Mukherjee emphasizes flat, ornamental space, transforming a serene everyday vignette into a profound exercise in shape, texture, and visual harmony.
