The painting *Hulagu Khan Destroys the Fort at Alamut* made around 1596 is an example of Mughal miniature art from the court of Emperor Akbar. It was designed by the artist Basawan and coloured by Nand Gwaliori. The work shows the moment when Hulagu Khan destroyed the fortress of Alamut in Iran in 1256. This painting is part of a manuscript called the *Chinghiz-nama* which honors the history and achievements of Genghis Khan and his successors.
In the scene the military operation is shown as a organized and dramatic event. Hulagu Khan stands out in the image leading the attack. Around him soldiers, horses and other figures move across the landscape bringing energy and motion to the composition. The strong solid fortress contrasts with the advancing army highlighting the clash between authority and resistance. The fall of Alamut is not a moment in history—it becomes a symbol of military strength overpowering a long-standing stronghold.
The painting reveals the interest in fine detail and realistic representation. Artists carefully painted the clothing, weapons, horses, buildings and plants making the scene rich and full of life. At the time the use of bright colours and fine lines gives each person a distinct look while keeping the overall image balanced and harmonious.
Beyond telling a story the painting has a political meaning. Emperor Akbar supported the creation of books about great conquerors like Genghis Khan and Timur. By doing he linked the Mughal dynasty to a powerful Central Asian past. The image of Hulagu Khan’s victory thus becomes more than a record. It also promotes ideas, about rule, power and the right of the kings to govern. It reinforces the message that military strength and imperial legitimacy go hand in hand.
The artwork excels in dynamic spatial movement. The diagonal pathways, crowded cavalry, and stacked stone ramparts lead the viewer's eye upward toward the fort's breach.
