Haboku Sansui (landscape)

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: Tokyo National Museum in Tokyo, Japan. Under inventory number A-282
Location History:Sesshu was based in Suo province, when he made the painting in 1495. The painting travelled to Kyoto with Soen, Sesshu's disciple. Now it is securely located in Tokyo National Museum in Tokyo, Japan. Under inventory number A-282 and was designated a National Treasure on 22 November 1952.

The lower third contains the actual landscape, utilizing the haboku (broken/splashed ink) technique. Eschewing defined outlines, Sesshū relies on layered, economics-of-brushwork ink washes to evoke misty mountains, trees, and water with an incredible degree of abstraction. The upper sections are filled with substantial calligraphic inscriptions, featuring Sesshū's dedication to his pupil Sōen alongside commemorative poems brushed by six notable Kyoto Gozan Zen temple monks.
