**Flowering Peach and Peonies** (18th century) is a hanging scroll by the Chinese painter **Zou Yigui** (1686–1772), done in ink and color on silk. It now belongs to the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. The painting shows two flowers loved throughout Chinese art: the delicate pink blossoms of a peach tree, and the fuller, richer blooms of peonies. Zou Yigui doesn't paint them exactly as they'd appear together in nature instead, he arranges them in an idealized, almost poetic way, letting the viewer enjoy their beauty side by side. In Chinese painting tradition, flowers often carry seasonal meaning: the peach blossom marks the beginning of spring, while the peony, blooming later, marks its close. Together, they represent the full arc of the season, from its first stirrings to its final glory. In the upper right corner, the artist has added his own poem, describing his garden courtyard filled with these "intoxicating blossoms." This blending of poetry, calligraphy (the seals stamped at top and bottom), and painting reflects the *literati* tradition in Chinese art, where a scholar-painter's personal voice through verse and brushwork becomes part of the artwork itself, not just decoration. Zou Yigui was known for his refined, naturalistic flower-and-bird paintings, and this piece is a good example of that gentle, contemplative style quiet, elegant, and rooted in nature symbolism rather than dramatic storytelling.
