Flowering Peach and Peonies

Flowering Peach and Peonies is a traditional Chinese ink painting from the 18th century. At the top half of the painting is a branch of flowering peach with pointy leaves and layered blossoms in light pink. At the bottom half are two peony flowers, with one being white and the other having pinkish-purple ombre petals. For painting the flowering peach and peony blossoms, the artist utilises light ink washes to give the petals a sense of translucency, capturing the light and delicate nature of the flowers, while creating a sense of dimension between the layers. For the leaves, thin and meticulous linework is used in drawing its veins. While the petals and the leaves are precisely drawn with dainty and light-handed outlining, the branches are drawn with coarser looking brush strokes. This creates a sense of textural contrast between hard and soft, rough and delicate in the painting. In the inscription at the top right corner, we can see a poem by the artist, which describes a beautiful scene of spring rain and the vigorous blossoming of flowers across the garden. The poem is followed by the artist’s signature (both sobriquet and name), along with his seal stamped in red. The artist, Zou Yigui, was a painter, as well as served as a high ranking court official during the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911). He was born in Wuxi (city in Jiangsu province, China), and lived from 1686 to 1772.
