This scroll was created by Lin Liang, one of the leading Cantonese painters who worked at the court of the Ming Dynasty and became known for his loose, ink-heavy style of painting birds and flowers in monochromatic scenes. Liang captures his approach to painting ducks and reeds through this work . It is done in ink and color on silk. The ducks are placed among reeds, the kind of scene Lin Liang painted many times later. The brushwork is what really carries it though, loose and sure in places, built more from broad strokes than careful outlines, so that it creates the impression of ducks moving, even though nothing in real is happening, yet it certainly feels like it.
