Drei Frauen in der Kirche (Three Women in Church)

Support Type: Wood Panel
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Hamburger Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany

The three figures form a compact, almost vertical arrangement that fills the foreground. The parallel church pews and the restricted viewpoint create a sense of enclosure. The women do not interact with one another, emphasizing their individual concentration. Leibl transforms a simple scene of three peasant women at prayer into a highly controlled study of realism, stillness, individuality and rural social life, making the painting one of the key achievements of German Realism.
