Domenico Fetti was a Baroque painter. The main features or qualities of Baroque art are its grandeur, richness, tension and drama. Fetti aimed to heighten emotional exuberance. Domenico Fetti was a peripatetic artist who usually worked in Rome, Mantua and Venice. He was trained by Lodovio Cigoli and later by Andrea Commodi. Later on, his major patron became Duke Ferdinando Gonzaga at Mantua. For his patron, he made a number of parables. They were various representations of the New Testament. He had also worked with Mannerist style. It was in Venice that Fetti adopted the Baroque art style. His parables were probably his best work. His technique is distinctive-the broader portions are primed first with dark colours, then rapid brush strokes are used to quickly highlight with bright tones.
The painting- "David with the head of Goliath", similarly is a depiction of the Old Testament event of David, a shepherd boy who decapitated the Giant Goliath. This dramatic painting is the aftermath of the story. David is sitting on a rock with the giant's head in his left hand. He is holding Goliath's sword in his other hand. In the background, we can see the headless body of the slayed giant. True to his mature Baroque style, he has used strong contrasts of light and dark colours to build the dramatics of light and shadow. Fetti had reportedly painted multiple copies of the subject.
