David with the head of Goliath

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister

The work by Domenico Fetti known as "David with the Head of Goliath" depicts the aftermath of an important battle from the Old Testament. Instead of depicting the fight, Fetti portrays David holding Goliath’s decapitated head in one hand and the giant’s sword in the other. The decapitated body of Goliath is in the background. The use of high contrast between light and dark brings out the powerful effects of light and shadows that are common in Baroque art. Fetti uses swift brush strokes and highlights to enhance drama in his painting.
