Cherries and Carnations

Support Type: Parchment
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Galleria Palatina, Palazzo Pitti, Uffizi Galleries, Florence, Italy (inventory: Galleria Palatina 1890, no. 4764)
Location History:Painted as part of a commissioned series of twenty fruit and vegetable still lifes for the Medici court between 1655 and 1662, originally displayed together by Grand Duchess Vittoria della Rovere in the Stanza dell'Aurora at the Villa di Poggio Imperiale. It remains today in the Palatine Gallery of the Uffizi Galleries in Florence.

Garzoni transforms a simple arrangement of cherries and carnations into a lively study of nature. The rounded cherries suggest ripening and movement rather than stillness, challenging the idea of natura morta (still life). Her precise watercolour technique on parchment highlights the delicate textures and forms of the fruits and flowers. The work also reflects the refined taste of the Medici court and Vittoria della Rovere’s interest in flowers and natural beauty.
