The iconic painting of Maharani Tarabai was created by Baburao painter also known as Baburao Krishnarao Mistry (1890-1954). He was a foundational figure in the world of Modern Indian visual art and also a pivotal pioneer in the Marathi Cinema. He founded the Maharastra Film Company in Kolhapur. The painting depicts Tarabai in Swadeshi apparel, riding dynamically against the rugged scenes of Deccan fortress. This canvas is constructing an archetypal of a sovereign female autonomy, whilst blending realism with heroic hagiography. The paintings a strong and articulate woman, fierce and strong in her agency, riding a horse in her cultural attire. This painting was created during the pre-independent India to operate a strong indian identity and authority.
