Zebra

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England

Ustad Mansur’s depiction of the zebra transforms an unfamiliar animal into a remarkable study of observation, curiosity, and imperial fascination. The zebra’s bold black-and-white stripes dominate the composition, while its calm posture and carefully rendered anatomy demonstrate Mansur’s exceptional attention to natural detail. The delicate floral border contrasts with the animal’s striking pattern, framing it almost like a rare specimen worthy of close examination. More than a simple animal portrait, the work reflects the Mughal court’s interest in the natural world and its desire to document unusual creatures encountered through expanding cultural and diplomatic connections. The inscription and historical context further connect the painting to Emperor Jahangir’s fascination with accurately recording nature. Mansur’s precise treatment gives the zebra both scientific presence and artistic dignity, making the work an important example of Mughal naturalistic painting.
