Current Location: Basilica of Santissima Annunziata, Florence

"The Birth of the Virgin" by Andrea del Sarto is a portrayal of a sacred biblical moment with the intimacy of a ordinary moment from the Renaissance period. While most artists would focus on the grandeur of the event itself, Andrea portrays the entrance of Mary in a lively upper-class home. On the left side, one sees the female servants washing and tending to the baby, with Saint Anne lying down in bed with the assistance of other people. At the middle, there is the presence of a well-dressed noble woman who seems to be congratulating the occasion. There are the putti above who hint at the divinity of the painting.
