Full Body Self-Portrait

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, Spain.
Location History:* Created in 1912, the painting remained within the private domain of MaRo’s family for over a century. In 2016, the Museo Reina Sofía officially acquired the masterpiece, moving it into the public state collection. The painting was temporarily relocated within Madrid to the Museo del Prado. It was featured as a prominent piece in the highly publicised exhibition, Invitadas. Fragmentos sobre mujeres, ideología y artes plásticas en España (1833-1931). After the exhibition concluded, it returned to its home institution.

Autorretrato de cuerpo entero is a confident and striking self portrait that challenges traditional expectations of femininity and womanhood. María Roësset Mosquera presents herself with dignity, independence and quiet strength rather than sentimentality. Her direct gaze, upright posture and elegant black dress convey confidence and individuality, while the simple background keeps the viewer's attention focused entirely on her presence. I understand this artwork as a powerful statement of identity and resilience. Instead of conforming to social expectations, MaRo portrays herself as a modern artist with authority and self belief. The combination of realism and expressive simplicity gives the portrait emotional depth without unnecessary drama. Overall, the painting is both visually compelling and historically significant, celebrating artistic independence and the changing role of women in the early twentieth century.
