| Location History: | * Created in 1912, the painting remained within the private domain of MaRo’s family for over a century. In 2016, the Museo Reina Sofía officially acquired the masterpiece, moving it into the public state collection. The painting was temporarily relocated within Madrid to the Museo del Prado. It was featured as a prominent piece in the highly publicised exhibition, Invitadas. Fragmentos sobre mujeres, ideología y artes plásticas en España (1833-1931). After the exhibition concluded, it returned to its home institution. |
Autorretrato de cuerpo entero acts as a crucial bridge toward the vanguard feminist artistic movements of 1920s and 1930s Spain. MaRo served as an inspirational matriarch for an extraordinarily creative family—she was the aunt of painter Marisa Roësset, sculptor Marga Gil Roësset, and publisher Consuelo Gil Roësset. Her self-portrait laid the aesthetic foundation for a generation of Spanish women who demanded a place in avant-garde culture.
