The painting was completed in 1940 at Saraya (Uttar Pradesh) during the final phase of Amrita Sher-Gil's career. It later entered the collection of the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, where it remains today as part of the museum's permanent collection.
Ancient Story Teller (1940) is one of Amrita Sher-Gil's mature Indian-period paintings and reflects her deep engagement with rural life and indigenous visual traditions. The composition depicts a domestic gathering centred around an elderly storyteller, whose presence unites the surrounding figures in a quiet moment of shared attention.
