This Mughal miniature depicts “An Attempt to Assassinate Akbar at Delhi” from the Akbarnama, and is attributed to Jagan, with Bhawani the Elder and Madhav also contributing to the work. The scene represents an assassination attempt against Emperor Akbar in Delhi. Akbar appears prominently at the centre, mounted on a horse and reacting to the sudden attack, while his attendants and soldiers rush towards the attackers. The energetic movement of horses, weapons, and overlapping figures creates a dramatic sense of confusion and urgency. The architectural setting, with its red sandstone buildings, balconies, and enclosed spaces, establishes the event within the imperial city. Persian text panels divide the composition and provide a narrative account of the incident. Jagan’s composition is particularly notable for its crowded arrangement and strong use of gestures to communicate action and emotion. The miniature demonstrates the collaborative character of Akbar’s imperial atelier, where one artist could design the composition while others executed details and portraits. It also reflects the Akbarnama’s function as both a historical chronicle and a celebration of imperial authority: despite the threat surrounding him, Akbar remains visually central, reinforcing his courage, composure, and political power.
