In Christianity, specific allegories do not originate from a single, definitive book of the bible, instead their modern theological and visual expressions have developed gradually over centuries across three primary textual waves. Such is the allegory of the sacred heart of Jesus which has been painted by the 18th century Mexican painter Jose de Paez. The initial roots of the visual come from the New Testament, wherein, the Gospel of John describes a Roman soldier piercing the side of Jesus with a lance on the cross, causing an immediate flow of "blood and water". In hagiographic narratives, the early church fathers like St. Augustine and St. John Chrysostom interpreted this wound as the opening of Christ's heart, from which the sacraments of the church (baptism and eucharist) were born. The second wave arrived in the medieval age as the allegory was developed in the writings of Catholic mystics who meditated on Christ's physical wounds and the last phase came in the form of early modern theological and devotional texts such as the autobiography of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque etc. Within the composition, the fire surrounding Jesus' heart represents an intense, consuming and everlasting furnace for divine love of mankind, while the chain of thorns wrapped around the heart symbolise the sins, mockery and suffering inflicted on Jesus. The crucifixion of Christ is signified through a small cross which rises above the head, that also indicates Christ's ultimate redemptive sacrifice on calvary. A dense, swirling cloud of cherubs and winged angels encircle the heart. Jose de Paez follows a unique 18th century iconographic tradition by isolating the heart as a freestanding disembodied object that serves as the singular focal point of adoration. The imagery in the broader context aims to invite believers to contemplate a personal relationship with Christ and to respond to his sacrifice by displaying love and compassion for others.
