Location History:
Originally painted in the Guler–Kangra region of the Punjab Hills during the late eighteenth century for the celebrated Gita Govinda series. The folio later entered distinguished private collections and has been documented through major international auction catalogues, preserving its scholarly provenance.
Agony of a Dejected Lover: A Folio from the Gita Govinda is one of the finest surviving examples of late eighteenth-century Pahari miniature painting. The scene illustrates an emotional episode from Jayadeva's celebrated Sanskrit poem Gita Govinda, in which Radha experiences profound sorrow after seeing Krishna with the gopis. Rather than emphasising physical movement, the artist focuses on Radha's emotional state, using a carefully designed landscape of rolling green hills, winding streams, delicate trees, and open spaces to symbolise her loneliness and spiritual longing. The painting reflects the mature Guler–Kangra style, characterised by graceful human figures, refined facial expressions, harmonious colour combinations, and exceptional sensitivity toward nature.
This artwork is especially important in the study of Pahari painting because of its scholarly attribution. Art historian W. G. Archer proposed that the celebrated Gita Govinda series was executed by Khushala, the son of Manaku, with assistance from his cousin Gaudhu, the son of Nainsukh. Therefore, this painting has long been discussed in connection with Gaudhu's artistic contribution to the Seu family workshop. More recent scholars have adopted a more cautious position and generally classify the work as being produced by the Master of the First Generation after Nainsukh, acknowledging that the exact individual painter cannot be identified with complete certainty. Nevertheless, Gaudhu remains one of the principal artists associated with this important workshop, and his stylistic influence is considered significant in the continuation of the Nainsukh family tradition.
The painting demonstrates outstanding technical control through delicate brushwork, subtle modelling of forms, finely detailed vegetation, and balanced composition. Every element of the landscape contributes to the emotional narrative rather than serving merely as decoration.
