Ivan Bilibin’s Administering Justice in Kievan Rus (1907) reconstructs a judicial scene associated with the reign of Yaroslav the Wise, drawing on the legal culture represented by the Russkaya Pravda. The work reflects Bilibin’s wider fascination with medieval Russian history and folklore, which became central to his distinctive Neo-Russian and Art Nouveau visual language. Rather than focusing only on the legal act itself, the scene is concerned with the public performance of authority. The accused figure is placed within a crowded communal setting, while the ruler and his attendants establish a clear hierarchy between judge, subject, and spectators. The open setting is significant: justice appears as a collective and visible act, reinforcing the ruler’s position within the social order. This connects with the wider function of the Russkaya Pravda, which regulated punishment, compensation, property disputes, and the authority of the knyaz. Visually, Bilibin combines historicism with a highly decorative, linear treatment. The elaborate costumes, weapons, architecture, and patterned surfaces create an intentionally archaic atmosphere, while the strong contours and flattened spatial arrangement recall his work as an illustrator. The composition therefore feels almost theatrical, turning a historical event into a carefully staged image. Created in 1907, the painting also reflects the period’s growing interest in recovering a distinctly Russian medieval past. Bilibin’s reconstruction is consequently not simply historical illustration; it transforms medieval justice into an image of law, hierarchy, communal order, and national cultural memory.
