A Hindu Bridegroom's Marriage Procession

The painting known as 'A Hindu Bridegroom's Marriage Procession' is a notable instance of the Patna School's recording of Indian social customs in the early nineteenth century and is attributed to Sewak Ram; it shows the nighttime wedding procession of a Hindu bridegroom proceeding towards the bride's family home. The scene shows a numerous group of the bridegroom's male relatives and friends accompanying him. The groom is placed at the end of the procession and is seen riding a horse under a golden parasol; he is wearing floral garlands and clothes which are similar to those worn by a Rajput prince. The procession is illuminated by mica lanterns and candelabra stands, thus producing a strong contrast between the illuminated figures and the darkness of the night. The artist gives special attention to the participants' clothing, their ornaments, the ceremonial objects, and the way the procession is arranged. The inclusion of gold and some silver adds to the decorative richness of the composition. Moreover, the painting shows the effect of European artistic conventions in the natural way in which the figures are represented and in the way space is organised. The work is not only valuable in terms of its artistic merit but also functions as a visual record of the Hindu marriage traditions in colonial-era Bihar; it shows how the artists of the Patna School attended to the interests of the British patrons who wanted to know about Indian customs, ceremonies, and everyday life.
