Federico Barocci (1535-1612), born Federico Fiori in Urbino, was a painter and printmaker belonging to the late Italian Renaissance and practised Mannerism. Initially trained by his father and later by Battista Franco, Federico studied the works of well-known artists like Raphael, Titian, and Correggio, cultivating his own distinguishable style by combining bright colours, graceful figures, and emotions. Barocci had a brief career in Rome prior to permanently moving to Urbino after suffering a serious illness, most likely resulting from poisoning. He became one of the highly acclaimed artists in Italy, regardless of his deteriorating health. He was commissioned by various respected popes, noble, families, and religious institutions.
