Workmen in a Garden

Artist:Suraj
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence

Workmen in Garden by Basawan and Suraj Gujarati for Baburnama is the perfect visualisation of construction work on a Monday morning. This painting changes engineering into mughal artestry with organized layering of figures, geometrical shapes and water channels reflecting the Timurid ideal of imposing order over the landscape. Baswan and Suraj packed all of this into a composition that gives depth to the workers making them surreal as well as the main spectacle of the painting. Thus this painting acts as a reminder to all the work that goes behind making a piece of art timeless. Looking into its technicalities this opus has Hierarchical composition with orthogonal spatial organization and recession of space. They went with terracotta hues, ochre tonality and muted eathy palette with tonal gradation and subtle chiaroscuro for the miniature effect.
