Suraj, also known as Suraj Gujarati, was one of the most prominent painters of Akbar's painting workshop (tasvirkhana). Mainly active during the 16th century, he is widely known for his collaborative artworks, like his other contemporary counterparts, where a master artist would sketch out the composition of the painting known as tarrah and another master artist would fill out the painting known as rang amezi. His collaborative works with Basawan are most popularly known. In the Mughal imperial atelier, tasks were divided so no single painting attributed to his name can be found. His most famous works are found in the illustrations of the commissioned translation of Baburnama by Emperor Akbar
