Winter Harmony is an oil-on-canvas landscape by American painter John Henry Twachtman. The National Gallery of Art dates it to somewhere between 1890-1900. It depicts a stream curling back through snow banked woods on grounds that Twachtman owned near Greenwich, Connecticut. He painted this land repeatedly across different seasons. The painting’s color scheme relies largely on cool, light hues including white, gray, blue, lilac, and golden beige. Whistler promoted this approach, which clearly influenced Twachtman. Twachtman put the feeling into words himself, writing to fellow painter J. Alden Weir that snow made "the whole earth seem wrapped in a mantle," everything hushed to silence, a line critics still cite to explain why the winter scenes read as meditative rather than merely observational.
