This painting is about a man who found peace in nature, and about an artist who missed a world that was gone. It shows Wang Xizhi, a famous Chinese writer of beautiful handwriting who lived about 1,700 years ago, watching geese. People say he loved geese because the way they bend their long necks gave him ideas for his brush strokes. Qian Xuan painted this scroll around 1295 with ink, color, and gold on paper, and today it is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In the picture, the scholar relaxes in a quiet place with bamboo, trees, and a small pavilion. The artist used blue and green colors and simple, old-fashioned shapes, like the paintings of ancient times. Because of this, the place does not look real. It looks like a dream, a calm world far away in the past. Above the scene, Qian Xuan wrote a short poem. It says how nice the bamboo grove is, how peaceful the pavilion feels, and how Wang Xizhi will always be remembered as a man who loved geese. He signed it with his name and added his seals. This dream-like feeling comes from the artist's own life. In 1276 the Mongols took the capital of the Song dynasty, and Qian Xuan refused to work for the new rulers. He stayed loyal to the old time and painted ancient subjects to show how far he felt from the world around him. In the end, the painting reminds us that a quiet life close to nature can keep what a person loves, even when the world changes.
The historic style of the artist with blues and greens adds to the novelty of this work of art. The painting is notable in it's beautiful brushwork and textures.
