In Pietro da Cortona's Vision of Saint Francis, the earthly figure of the saint humbly accepts the Christ child offered to him by Mary, whilst she gleams with an almost theatrical divine light. This tension between his earthly reception and her celestial offering is characteristic of 17th-century painting, though Cortona’s characteristic fluid brush and brilliant colours imbue this particular piece with an intense life according to Vatican Museum experts. Herein I saw a picture, which embodies divine humility encountering love. Francis with the virtues of simplicity, poverty and spiritual awareness comes into contact with God in not the manner of earth, but a complete release into heavenly light in a swirling mass of bright colours of divine blessing.
