The painting was originally owned by General Count Ramboldo Collalto (1575–1630) of Mantua and remained in the Collalto family by descent. In 1956, it was acquired from Prince Oktavian Collalto by Count Antoine Seilern (1901–1978). It entered the Courtauld collection through the Princes Gate Bequest in 1978.
Bernardo Daddi (1280-1348) was a leading artist figure from Florence during the Early Renaissance period. He contributed significantly during the transition period from the preceding gothic art style through his portable altarpieces, especially small-scale works, which depicted realistic representation of religious images. This three-panel work or triptych presents Virgin Mary seated on a throne at the centre and holding the Christ in her lap. The Christ Child has raised his right hand symbolising a gesture of blessing. Mary secures the highest position in the panel due to her role as the queen of heaven and the principal intermediary between Christ and Human. The central composition is arranged symmetrically, with saints standing on either sides of Virgin and the Child. Their posture and calm expressions has created an atmosphere of reverence and contemplation. On the left panel, the Nativity or the episode of birth of christ is depicted, whereas, the right panel shows the episode of Crucifixion. Daddi was strongly influenced by Giotto’s work which can be identified in this panel through the realistic depiction of figures, emphasised by its volume and natural presence. It includes the soft modelling of faces, fine lines in drapery folds, and subtle gestures that make the holy figures appear compassionate and approachable. As Daddi belonged to the early phase of Renaissance, some of the important elements of Gothic art style were still employed in his works. Such as the use of gold background for the figures in this painting which removes the scene from earthly spaces and places it in a divine realm. Beyond its artistic qualities, the work presents the devotional culture of late-medieval Italy, where works like this were created for private devotion and its small-size allowed it to move and travel with its owner.
This painting is a remarkable piece from Early Renaissance. These kind of triptych alter-pieces were very popular in Italy and were mostly made for private use. Daddi very exquisitely showed off his prowess at the handling of color, subject matter, and material. It is one of his finest works.
