Painted by Shingei Geiami in Kyoto around 1480, "Viewing a Waterfall" was passed among private collectors and tea masters before being acquired by Kaichirō Nezu Sr. in the early 20th century. The artwork has been housed in the Nezu Museum in Tokyo since 1940.

executed as a hanging scroll on paper with subtle touches of colour with ink. Geiami was born into an artistic family, which deeply influenced his artistic ideals and artwork through Zen philosophy and Chinese Southern Song landscape traditions.
Geimai created this painting using expressive brushstrokes, layered washes and expansive negative space to evoke an introspective mood. Viewing a Waterfall, Geiami depicts a waterfall descending from a height into the mist, while maintaining muted visuals overall to invite viewers to experience the landscape as a place of spiritual reflection rather than alpine playground.
According to the inscription, the painting was presented to the monk Shōkei upon the completion of his artistic training, making it more meaningful by documenting artistic lineage and mentorship. Geiami was master of balancing solid forms and empty spaces demonstrating the Zen philosophy that silence and absence also possess as much meaning as visible forms. The use of a monochromatic palette further strengthens the painting's meditative quality , while encouraging emotional engagement over the visual excess.
Today, Viewing a waterfall is housed at the Nezu Museum, Tokyo and considered an Important Cultural Property having survived for centuries. Its refined simplicity, philosophical depth and brilliant execution of ink wash technique continue to inspire the young generations by illustrating the relation between nature, spiritual contemplation as well as artistic discipline in Japanese art.
