The artist refuses to focus on a single point of interest and chooses to transport the viewer into a horrible whirlpool of brutality as the battle violently unfolds. It is hard to distinguish a hero or a villain from the first look; instead, the artwork presents a complicated, oscillating hotbed of nervous, strained human eyes, muscles, and horses. By creating a vertical layering of figures instead of the traditionally horizontal, the artist paints a wall of kinetic friction. It is not a portrayal of imperial glory; rather, it is an intimate examination of the loss of the individual’s will and agency. The men, deprived of their identity by weaponry and similar uniforms, become nothing but units of the same monolith war-beast. On the very top of the painting, the silent pink stone of the fort is placed in an ironic comparison to the panic happening below; it reminds one of the eternal nature of the Earth contrasting to the human frailty of ambition.
