Venus of Urbino is one of the many masterpieces painted by Tiziano Vecellio, popularly known as Titian. This oil on canvas is a classic example of high renaissance paintings. With a stylized figure, focus on humanism and anatomy, and a good depiction of linear perspective; this piece nails all the points required to classify a renaissance classic. In this painting, Titian has seemingly employed a combination of three techniques - grissaile, sfumato, and chiaroscuro. The supple softness of the naked body of the reclining Venus is due to the application of layered translucent glazes. The smooth transitions between colours, figures, and architectural background in the picture plane is due to the efficient use of the sfumato. Furthermore, the rich contrast between the dark background and the bright nude woman as well as the overall balance between lights and darks is a characteristic of the chiaroscuro technique. Titian, with this piece really instated the genre of the "reclining nude", a theme frequently revisited throughout the history of Western Art. In this scene, we are faced with a the direct and unwavering gaze of a nude woman, who is reclining on a bed and cushions in all her pristine glory. She lightly holds a bunch of roses in her right hand while her left hand covers her core. Her bold gaze, gestures, as well as her entire state of being implies a sense of sensuality and eroticism. Her elongated torso and petite feet are features of the stylized representation of human figure prevalent at the time. The crumpled sheets and messy cushions beneath her further enrich the viewer's grasp of Venus's presence. This piece is thought to be commissioned by Guidobaldo II della Rovere, the Duke of Urbino; for his young bride Giulia Varano.
