Vasily Mirovich Standing over the Body of Ivan VI at Schlusselburg Fortress

Like many Russian Realist paintings of the late 19th century, this artwork depicts the tragic execution of Ivan VI. Ivan Antonovich became Emperor of Russia at just two months old. However, within a year, he was deposed by Elizabeth Petrovna, the only surviving heir of Peter the Great. Ivan spent most of his life imprisoned with his family and was later transferred to solitary confinement in Schlusselburg Fortress. On 15 July 1764, Ivan was killed by a guard who had been ordered to execute him if anyone attempted to rescue him. This happened during a secret coup led by Vasily Mirovich. The painting captures the dramatic moment when Mirovich and his men discover Ivan’s lifeless body and realise they have arrived too late. The artist cleverly uses visual elements to heighten the emotional impact of the scene. The red coat lying beside Ivan resembles the pool of blood surrounding him, while his peaceful expression suggests that he was executed in his sleep. His long hair, pale skin, and unkempt beard reflect the physical and emotional toll of years spent in captivity. The soldiers’ faces convey varying degrees of shock, disbelief, and horror, with some—including Mirovich—dropping their rifles in astonishment. Ivan is the central focus of the composition, highlighted by his pale yellow clothing, which contrasts sharply with the vivid reds and blues worn by Mirovich and his men. The painter masterfully captures the soldiers’ expressions with remarkable realism, while the dramatic composition and emotional intensity recall the artistic traditions of the Baroque period and the Italian Renaissance.
