Sawlaram Lakshman Haldankar’s Untitled (Lady in a Garden) is a fine and elegant watercolour painting that exemplifies the artist’s renonwned command of colour and figurative detail. Haldankar (1882–1968) was an important figure in the Bombay School of Art. He was born in Sawantwadi, Maharashtra, and studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay, where he trained under artists including M. V. Dhurandhar and Cecil Burns. He later founded the Haldankar Fine Art Institute and was among the founders of the Art Society of India in 1918. The painting presents an elegantly dressed woman standing within a lush garden landscape. She is seen wearing a purple-pink sari edged with a darker decorative border, paired with a striped short-sleeved blouse. Her sari is draped over her head in a manner associated with traditional Indian dress. Golden coloured bangles adorn her wrists, while her relaxed posture and gentle facial expression give the figure a sense of quiet composure. Her right-hand rests on a large earthen water pot positioned on a stone platform, while her other hand extends gracefully behind her. The pot highlights the juxtaposition between an everyday domestic object and an otherwise picturesque setting. In the painting, Haldankar surrounds the woman with dense foliage, winding branches, distant blue hills, and a softly coloured sky. The vegetation forms a natural frame around the figure, while the pathway and stone structure lead the viewer's eye toward her. The composition therefore balances portraiture with landscape where the woman is the central focus, but she appears integrated into her environment rather than isolated from it. It can be observed that nature occupies almost as much visual space as the woman.
